It is the official timekeeper for Toronto.

When 2009 or any other new year arrives... it is the haunted tolling of the bells echoing throughout the downtown core that officially mark the start of the new year.

Residents of Toronto first heard the monumental bells peal on December 31, 1900.

Photos of the clock at Old City Hall facing northbound from anywhere on Bay Street, are great shots.

The clock tower reaches 300 feet or 103.6 metres above the Queen Street and Bay Street intersection, it's positioned to look down Bay Street.

The clock and bells were not installed until late 1900.

The bells of the clock tower are one of the most recognizable traits of our city".

The largest bell, "Big Ben", weighs 11,648 lbs. or 5443 kg.
